The History of Weight Training

Welcome back!

If you scroll down the page you will see I posted about the history of the gym..today I'm going talk about the history of weight training. Weight training is commonly associated with the gym.

Here is just a quick in sight to why people lift weights: Lifting weights helps to strengthen and size the muscle you are working. I could bore you with how exactly it works and start to talk about physics but I know I don't want to hear about that so I'm going to take a wild guess that you don't either.

There are 4 main sports associated with weight lifting: Bodybuilding, Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting and strongman. General weight training is very common among sports people.

Now for the history part of things....Weight training can be traced back to the start of time. There has never been a time when people haven't been curious about how they can change their bodies. One of the first recorded human beings to use weight to strengthen him was an Ancient Greek wrester Milo of Croton. He used to carry a new born calf on his back every day.

A dumbbell is a common site in the gym and the barbell later became popular in the 19th century. The original barbells had hollow spheres on either side which were filled with sand depending on your level of strength..quite smart. The barbell we use these days which has weighted plates stacked on to it came into use in the late 19th century. In the 1970s a bodybuilding movie called Pumping Iron caused weight training to become very popular in a short space of time. Shortly after that Arnold Schwarzenegger became a well-known in the public eye.

The Effect The Location of a Gym has on it's Users

Sup blog enthusiasts!

Today I'm going to talk about how the location of a gym effects the people who use the gym. Whether you drive, walk or take public transport to the gym it effects your life in some way! It may not drastically effect your life but deciding whether to walk in the rain or wait that extra hour for a lift off your parents or friends then it effects your life!

If you decide to walk it has effected you because : 1. You are going to get drenched in the rain and it is quite likely you won't be in the mood to gym when you arrive.
2. You could end up sick! ( A cold really does effect your gym ability)
3. Although you are drenched and grumpy you have arrived at the gym earlier then you would have if you waited for a lift! This may mean that you can spend longer in the gym or make plans to do something later on in the day.

If you decided to wait a get a lift you are effected because: 1. You arrive dry and still in the mood to work out.
2. You may have arrived ready to go but you have arrived later then you wanted to. This may mean you rush your work out or do not have time to do something else during the day.

You see now that deciding simpily how to get to the gym effects your everyday life so the location of your gym is EXTREMELY important.

History of the Gym!

Yo!

The first recorded public gym was found in Paris, France in 1847. Clearly people have being getting fit for over a hundred years! Some people do believe that a gym was open before this in Santa Monica, California.

Over time gyms have expanded and changed to accommodate the public and the equipment that is available. For all gym enthusiasts out there 'Muscle Beach' will be something you are familiar with! Muscle Beach is located in Venice, California. It has been to to accommodate some very well known bodybuilders including the legendary Arnold ( Arnie). For more information on Muscle Beach visit : http://www.musclebeach.net/

Obviously not everyone was going to travel to Venice to visit and train at Muscle Beach so gym's like Gold's Gym opened up all over the United States and become very popular. Gold's Gym is now a common hang out for bodybuilders and casual gym goer's. Gold's was originally opened by Joe Gold in California but there is now more the 600 Gold's spread around the world. Gold's became a friendly place where anyone could come to try and achieve their goals. Gold's gym pride themselves on being able to help normal people find their strength. Their slogan is : ' Gold's Gym... Know Your Own Strength.'

After the gym exploded onto the scene it has now spread across the world and it would be rare to find a city which does not have one.

Gym Location

Hi again!

I decided my first post would be on the location of the gym. In my opinion, the majority of gym's are located in the outskirts of cities. I believe the main reason for this is simple...more space. Gym's need space and space is hard to find in the inner city. For example, David Lloyd Riverview in Clonskeagh. Riverview is not only a gym but a social club. Its facilities include: a restaurant, a smoothie bar, outdoor tennis courts, indoor tennis courts, a fully equipped gym, a swimming pool, steam room and many many more facilities. For a business like this to open they need a significant amount of space. This amount of space can simply not be found in the inner city.

The majority of gym's in the inner city are located in tall buildings and can often be very hard to find. For example, Raw Conditioning in Harcourt, is between a group of flats and a carpark. It is not the kind of place a person stumbles upon! The closer you get to the inner city the harder gym's become to find and the taller they get. Of course this is not in every case but in the majority of cases it is true! Riverview is on a main road and takes up a large amount of space while Raw Conditioning is the complete opposite..hard to find and takes up less space.

People may believe that the bigger the gym the better. In my opinion, that is false. If I was to choose between Raw Conditioning and Riverview I would choose Raw Conditiong..simply for it's high quality weight room which in my opinion you cannot find in Riverview.

I'll post again soon!
